Béatrice has owned the Clos de Vallombreuse, The Originals Relais hotel since 1995, and in that time she has never tired of making her beautiful 19th-century manor house in Brittany ever more appealing. Renovations, an extension, creating a superb garden, a pool, have all contributed to the charm and character of this 30-room establishment. Its restaurant is renowned too in Douarnenez for its creative cuisine and its view over the bay. But what Béatrice hopes her guests will remember above all is: “the welcome, the responsiveness, and the attentive service received from all the staff.”

Whether it overlooks the garden or the sea, every room is decorated in a simple yet elegant style, a blend of old-world charm and highly contemporary décor. All 30 rooms are very spacious and can accommodate up to 3 people. Most have a balcony or a private terrace with views over Douarnenez bay. Some are connecting rooms, ideal for families travelling together.

You’ll enjoy sea views at breakfast and other meals, with ambiance and authentic setting guaranteed. When the skies are clear you can sit out on the terrace to enjoy the flavours and aromas of Brittany (both land and sea) which feature on the menu. Perhaps you would like to start your meal with a house cocktail? Or would you rather wait until morning to sample cakes, breads and jams, all homemade too, served with locally produced cold meats and cheeses if you so wish.

LE CLOS DE VALLOMBREUSE

In this renowned Douarnenez restaurant you’ll enjoy original flavours created not by a chef, but by a “Maître Restaurateur”, says Béatrice. According to the season, treasures from the land are skilfully combined with the flavours of the sea to outstanding effect: cheeses, oysters, snails, fish, cider and much much more, all from local producers. Please note: the restaurant is closed on Tuesday lunchtimes, Sunday evenings, and Mondays from October to April.

Continue along the coast. Keep heading west, towards the area which gave the department its name (Finistère) and discover the magnificent panorama of the famous Raz de Sein, familiar to sailors with its la Vieille and Tévennec lighthouses, and the fascinating île de Sein lying at sea level. Set your sights on the land and the authentic Quimper. Further south lies Concarneau with its walled city, one of Brittany’s most visited sites.
