“I’ve always emphasised a warm welcome, comfort and excellent value for money.”
Gérard is a pharmacist and hotelier and, in his own words, a “keen supporter of city centres”. His hotel, The Originals City, Hotel Le Valois, Cognac, can be found in the very heart of Cognac in the Charente region. This elegant 3-star hotel in Cognac has 53 air-conditioned bedrooms and three studios with mezzanines. Gérard and his team create a welcoming ambience and provide a premium service to ensure guests feel right at home. Having built this Cognac city centre hotel in 1982, Gérard is always looking to improve the services available. It makes an ideal base for those looking to take full advantage of all that the city and wider Poitou-Charentes region have to offer.

FOOD & BEVERAGE
Although the hotel doesn’t have its own restaurant, Gérard will delight in telling you about the best places to eat in Cognac. The hotel bar is a place where you can relax and try the region’s infamous cognac liqueur. And, to get the day off to a good start, Gérard provides a generous buffet breakfast served in a beautiful breakfast room or on the terrace.
Gérard’s hotel is in the perfect central Cognac location. It makes a wonderful base for exploring the city and the marvellous surrounding Poitou-Charentes area.
COGNACThe hometown of King Francis I of France is an elegant bourgeois city which gets lively in the summer, especially when the blues festival and Cognac Festival are on. It has lovely quays on the River Charente flowing through it, as well as beautiful parks and gardens. Art and history enthusiasts will enjoy its museums, different-sized cognac producers and Romanesque and Renaissance stone buildings, while the surrounding area offers wonderful vineyard walks which lovers of nature and wine are sure to appreciate.
ANGOULÊMEAngoulême lies on a steep hill with ramparts overlooking the River Charente and the surrounding skyline punctured by church towers. This colourful city has a lovely feel to it. Angoulême is something of a southern “bubble”, evoking the comic-style speech bubble street and wall signs here in the undisputed capital of the comic strip. Don’t miss the museums which can be easily reached on foot.
FONTDOUCE ABBEYSaint-Bris-des-Bois lies on the edge of the historic provinces of Angoumois and Saintonge and is definitely worth a visit. There is a remarkable monastery, Fontdouce Abbey, which was founded in 1111 by William of Conchamp, Lord of Taillebourg. The Abbey is set in green natural surroundings and has undergone a variety of transformations over the centuries, as can be seen today from the two Romanesque chapels dating from 1120 which lie one on top of the other, the sumptuous Gothic-inspired chapter hall and the recently renovated monks’ room.
