A fabulous location just a stone’s throw from one of Portugal’s architectural marvels. The green and quiet surroundings. A friendly and attentive team. Welcome to Madalena Tavares’s hotel.
“Here, looking after our guests is more than a passion: it’s a tradition.”
Madalena has long been involved in Alcobaça life (indeed, she was a previous town councillor) and seized the opportunity to offer her locality a new hotel in 2015. “The Originals Boutique Hotel Solar do Cerca do Mosteiro, Alcobaça is on the site of the old Alcobaça Monastery farm. The current building dates from the mid-nineteenth century and was turned into a “house” by its former owners - a couple of Germans who moved here in the 70s”, she explains. Having done some decoration work and added in bathrooms, she then opened this new 4-star hotel just a stone’s throw from one of the country’s most fantastic architectural jewels, near the famous beach city of Nazaré. “The hotel’s strengths are its lovely size (nine rooms including three apartments), its location, the quiet and the setting.” There are 22 acres of grounds with a heated outdoor pool, gardens, a terrace overlooking the monastery, a meadow with an orchard and a vegetable garden. A Portuguese paradise indeed.
The nine rooms at The Originals Boutique, Hotel Solar do Cerca do Mosteiro, Alcobaça are divided between three buildings. You will love their understated bespoke and sophisticated modern decor. Some have beautiful and original charcoal frescos done by a local artist. The smallest rooms are 45 square metres in size! Meanwhile, the Suite do Reis extends to 130 square metres and has its own private sauna. Groups can opt for one of the three apartments for four to seven people.
When it comes to the buffet breakfast, fruit, milk, cheese, breads, cakes and local produce take pride of place at The Originals Boutique, Hotel Solar do Cerca do Mosteiro, Alcobaça. Explore Portugal’s most beautiful Cistercian abbey. The beautifully sculpted Baroque facade aside, the plain white eighteenth-century buildings around the square do not reflect the amazing architecture inside. Only the gothic portico and two saint statues framing it remind us that this sacred place - the second pantheon of the Portuguese monarchy - was constructed in the twelfth century. Inside, some of the walls are covered with tilework telling the legendary story of how the monastery was built. Don’t miss the magnificent tombs of Inês de Castro and Dom Pedro (King Peter I), famous for their legendary tragic love story.
Alcobaça is the ideal base from which to visit fascinating historic towns like Tomar with its “Charola” (Templar church) and Batalha with its gothic monastery. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You are sure to love the characterful and charming medieval town of Óbidos, and Nazaré, a little seaside resort with a beautiful sandy beach and sometimes incredible waves that attract surfers from all over the world.
Hold your meetings, seminars and conferences in an extraordinary setting. Here, you will find the rooms and equipment you need set among terraces, gardens and views of Alcobaça Monastery (a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal). The Solar da Cerca do Mosteiro has a small meeting room suitable for around thirty people and a large conference room for 350 people.
