Things to do in Lille
Lille is France's fourth-largest urban centre, and it has a cultural heritage to match. Lovers of historic buildings will enjoy Old Lille. Take in the beautiful 17th-century architecture as you visit the Vieille Bourse, Grand Place and Citadel.
For art lovers, the Lille Fine Arts Museum rivals the Louvre for range. And if you like shopping, a visit to Lille's markets is well worthwhile. In particular, try the Lille Braderie. It's the largest flea market in Europe, dating back to the 12th century.
Exploring beyond Lille
The city centre is only the beginning. The region around Lille is also packed with cultural destinations. The nearby town of Arras, for example, dates back to the Iron Age. There, you can see the magnificent UNESCO-listed Town Hall and the Grand Place, dating back to the 9th century. The town of Lens is also worth a visit, not least for the Louvre-Lens, the Paris art gallery's first satellite. You can also visit the aristocratic city of Douai, home of the Parliament of Flanders until the Revolution.
Of course, the region has a more sombre history too. Many of World War One's famous battles took place here. You can learn all about it by visiting Ypres as well as over 52 other sites and remembrance trails.
