“From the top of these cliffs (80 metres high), 65 million years gaze upon you!” the people of Ault might well paraphrase. It is here, in this small commune in the southern Somme, that sand gives way to dark pebbles and white cliffs plunging into a sea shimmering with turquoise reflections. The most beautiful spot from which to admire them? The Bois de Cise, a lush green haven nestled in a fold of the cliff. Sheltered from wind and sea spray, the site reveals luxuriant vegetation alongside elegant Belle Époque villas.
Also worth discovering is the Porte du Moulinet, which opens onto a vaulted brick staircase leading up to the hill that once housed one of Ault’s five mills. The view from the top is simply breathtaking.

Just 1 minute and 55 seconds is all it takes to reach Le Tréport’s most breathtaking panorama, the time it takes for the town’s legendary funicular to climb to the top of the cliff. From there, the town, the harbor, the turquoise-hued sea, and the magnificent villas of Mers-les-Bains unfold before your eyes in a single sweeping view. Once back down, wander through the Cordiers district, built two centuries ago on a bed of pebbles. Its maze of narrow lanes lined with colorful houses is a true delight for strollers and dreamers alike.

An immense expanse of sand and water, framed by marshes and long dunes, the Bay of Somme attracts lovers of wide-open spaces and unspoiled nature. Here, sky and sea merge, and you might almost believe in a mirage as you watch colonies of grey seals basking on the sandbanks at Pointe du Hourdel. The best way to see them is on a guided tour led by an expert. To take in the full beauty of the bay, hop aboard the little steam train that runs between Le Crotoy and Cayeux-sur-Mer. A true escape and a journey back in time!

The charm of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme lies as much in its beautiful built heritage as in its long history. This medieval town, with its impressively preserved ramparts, enchants visitors with its cobbled streets and flower-adorned houses. William the Conqueror and Joan of Arc both passed through here, perhaps paying homage to Saint-Valery, who is buried in the eponymous chapel whose foundations date back to the Middle Ages. Not to be missed: the sailors’ district and its Rue des Moulins, lined with charming little colorful houses.

A royal residence, the Château d’Eu primarily served as a summer retreat for King Louis-Philippe, who made it his seasonal residence from 1830 to 1848. Today, as the town hall, the château welcomes visitors eager to explore a home with foundations five centuries old, showcasing the Louis-Philippe style and the modernizations undertaken by his grandson, the Count of Paris, from the 1870s onward.
Heritage enthusiasts will particularly appreciate the visit to the Galerie des Guise, destroyed by fire in 1902 and restored in 2000 and 2013, a true masterpiece.
