Let us not be mistaken: Molière never lived in this beautiful Haussmann-style private mansion… And yet, the favorite playwright of Louis XIV and his world are present everywhere here. From the frescoes adorning the walls to the decorative wallpaper in the rooms, not to mention the many busts punctuating the dining lounge and the vast patio serving the upper floors. The Originals Boutique, Grand Hôtel Molière is an emblem of the town of Pézenas, through its architectural beauty, its long history, and its location on the main square of this Languedoc town.
‘Taking over this 3-star, 23-room hotel was a source of great pride for us,’ recall Magali and Stéphane, who ran a family campsite for nearly 50 years. Children of the region, they know the spotlight will always belong to the city’s most illustrious figure, yet they hope their guests will remember them as well, for their warm and welcoming nature.

Tips from your hotelier

Pézenas

The best way to discover the ‘City of Molière’ is simply to slip into your most comfortable shoes. Entirely pedestrian, the old town invites you to slow down and admire every detail, from its private mansions and sculpted doorways to its Gothic façades. While the city’s history dates back to the time of Saint Louis, it was during the 17th and 18th centuries that Pézenas experienced a remarkable rise, becoming a major economic center. Today, Pézenas stands out for its artistic soul, with numerous art galleries and craftsmen’s workshops.

Lake Salagou in the Hérault region, a short drive from Le Grand Hôtel Molière in Pézenas.

Tips from your hotelier

Lake Salagou

Its surface area: 750 hectares. Its depth: 45 meters. Its colors: blue like the Languedoc sky, red like the ruffes that surround it, and even black, echoing the traces of this land’s volcanic past. One might imagine primeval origins, yet Lake Salagou was only ‘born’ in 1969, following the construction of a dam. And it took just three days, and a violent storm, to fill half of the 125 million cubic meters of water it holds!
Today, the largest and most famous lake in the Hérault region draws lovers of hiking and those captivated by nature’s ever-changing spectacle.

Stone houses and a cobblestone street in Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert at Le Grand Hôtel Molière in Pézenas.

Tips from your hotelier

SAINT-GUILHEM-LE-DÉSERT

A must-see in the region, Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert owes its name to a local hero: Guilhem, a cousin of Charlemagne. Celebrated for his feats of arms, he chose to withdraw from the world in the secluded and remote valley of Gellone, where he founded an abbey in 804. Located along the routes to Santiago de Compostela, the site quickly prospered beside the Verdus stream. One of the best-preserved medieval villages in the region, Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert now holds two prestigious labels: ‘Grand Site de France’ and ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages de France.’ As for its abbey, a jewel of early Languedoc Romanesque art, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Colorful boats moored on canal in Sète with city buildings at Le Grand Hôtel Molière in Pézenas.

Tips from your hotelier

Sète

Nestled between the sea, canals, and lagoon, the ‘Venice of Languedoc’ boasts a remarkable cultural vitality alongside authentic and lively maritime traditions, just look at its jousting tournaments, as popular as they are festive. After exploring the 12 kilometers of beaches and the fishing port, take in the views from Mont Saint-Clair before descending to the sea cemetery, where two of the city’s great names, Georges Brassens and Paul Valéry, rest in peace.
