When you arrive for your weekend in Lyon, you'll probably want to head straight for Vieux Lyon. The old town is a delight at any time of day or night. Pop into a boulangerie for some pastries and cakes or look for an old town restaurant serving local cuisine.

Visit the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste. Building work started in 1140, and inside, there are clocks that date back to 1383. This is one of the highlights of this fascinating city.

To get to the famous La Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière you have two options. There are 800 steps set into the hill leading up to it, so if you're feeling energetic, go for it! If you've already overindulged on French cheese, then choose the easier option of the funicular that will take you up to the top of the hill.

In the evening, unwind with a stroll along the side of the river. If you're visiting in winter, head for to the ferris wheel in La Place Bellecour for great city views.

Before finishing your Lyon weekend break, go to Les Halles market. This market is world-famous and with good reason. Be sure to leave space in your suitcase to stock up on delicious local cheeses, charcuterie, pastries and so much more!
