On his return from a trip to Lapland in 2012, Emil Leroy Jönsson had the slightly crazy idea of building an unusual, ecological and high-end hotel in the form of Scandinavian hyttes (cabins) in the upper reaches of the little Alsatian village of Breitenbach. “More than a hotel, I thought of a place where you live differently,” says the landscaper–town planner by trade, hotelier by passion. In this free, open and intimate space, 14 independent hyttes are scattered in nature around one house. There, guests meet and spend time together around the fire or a table in the restaurant which serves exclusively local produce. “48° North, The Originals Relais is a simple, friendly space where everyone feels good, like being at a friend’s house. Guests enjoy the pleasures of a good meal, a walk, swimming or simply doing nothing.”

48° North offers hyttes in place of rooms. Dotted around the natural setting, there are 14 of them with space for two to four people. Their design is inspired by traditional Scandinavian cabins. There’s no breeze blocks or concrete here but wood, stone and natural materials to enhance the strong graphic lines. Inside, it’s all about elegant wood and Nordic subtlety. Some hyttes feature a wellness area with a sauna and jacuzzi opening onto the landscape.

Welcome to the Felles Hytte, the central house. Your 100% local and organic breakfast and dinners will be served here. It's a warm and friendly place where you can sample dairy products from the village farm, bread from the local bakery, produce from the hotel vegetable garden and valley deli meats, morning and evening. Weather permitting, guests can enjoy the terrace and its views over the forest and beautiful Alsatian nature.

There are no freezers here but a very limited menu (three starters, two mains – one vegetarian – and three desserts). The chef is inspired by the seasons and the regional produce. He sets off in search of nature’s flavours in the village, garden and forest. Like Scandinavians, he fashions the raw produce from his walks to dream up simple recipes bursting with freshness and colour.

"Amazing moments "

Une parenthèse enchantée dans un lieu dédié à la détente et à la nature. Le personnel y est très sympathique, accueillant et professionnel. Les hébergements sont insolites et très confortables. Nous avons pu profité d' un sauna et d'un jacuzzi privatif. Un vrai plaisir. Mention particulière pour la carte du restaurant. Le chef est très créatif et le service est impeccable. L'accord en vin est recherché et même surprenant. Le petit-déjeuner servi en chambre était délicieux. Nous avons passé un magnifique séjour au 48° Nord et nous attendons avec impatience notre prochaine visite.

"Location scouting"

I visited the hotel to experience it myself, before we agree to an offer e received regarding a group booking for a car rally. Staff was very friendly, the hotel is truely unique, the location is brilliant. I hope covid goes away soon so that they can keep there business healthy as they really deserve it.

"Great little getaway!"

We really enjoyed our time at 48°Nord. Autumn is a travel time we can recommend to everyone. The cabins are very nice and offer everything you need. It would be great if the hotel could still provide bathrobes and slippers. It's great that breakfast is brought to the room. So the day starts really cozy. However, we were missing salt and pepper :-) The staff is really friendly, you feel very welcome and as a guest at the top priority.

"The most special hotel in Alsace"

You can find a better panoramic view directly from your bed the this hotel! There's no TV in the room cause the view outside is so much better. One of the best hotels we stayed in!!!

"Perfect stay, hope to go back someday!"

Beautiful location (great for hiking in the woods). Super charming hut and view. Food was so delicious and great value for money; chef was thoughtful about accommodating a gluten-free request. We also had a natural red wine that was amazing - wish I'd remembered to buy some bottles to take home! And finally, staff was wonderful. Really nice guy/host who helped us out throughout our stay; plus the effort that was put in to serve everyone food in our rooms was above and beyond. Thanks for everything! Only note is to be careful about keeping windows open, bugs of all types are all around - it's in the woods after all :)
