No need to lace up your hiking boots if you want to admire Auvergne from its peaks. At the foot of Puy de Dôme, hop on the Panoramique — an electric rack railway that gently climbs the 1,465-meter height of this ancient volcano. During the 15-minute ascent, an audio guide shares the story of the Puy. Once at the summit, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views over the Chaîne des Puys, Clermont-Ferrand, and the Massif du Sancy.
 

Carved within a lava flow formed 12,000 years ago, the Volvic Stone Cave is steeped in history. Quarrying has taken place here since the 13th century, and its distinctive black stone can be seen on many monuments throughout the region. The cave can be explored through three different visits: the historical tour, which retraces the lives of early 20th-century quarry workers; the Cave of Lights, a magical show specially created for young audiences; and the Santa Claus Cave, which comes to life at the end of the year.
