More fortress than palace, this building is one of the oldest royal residences in France. It is built on a hill overlooking Perpignan and owes its name to the kingdom of Majorca, a powerful Mediterranean state that included the Balearic Islands, Montpellier and part of Roussillon in the 13th and 14th centuries. Perpignan was its capital from 1276 to 1344. The palace's bare Gothic architecture was later fortified by Louix XI, Charles V and Vauban.
A symbol of Perpignan, the Castillet marks the entrance to the old town centre of the Catalan city. This red brick tower was built in the 14th century under the reign of Peter IV of Aragon and today houses the Casa Pairal, a small museum of popular arts and traditions. If you feel like it, you can climb the 142 steps of the tower to enjoy the view over the city.
An old fishing village with all the charm that goes with it. To discover it peacefully away from its tiny, crowded beaches, you have to take the plunge into its sloping, shady and colourful streets, covered with bougainvillea and laurel trees. Henri Matisse and André Derain found inspiration here and it is easy to see why. Not to be missed is a visit to Notre-Dame-des-Anges, built on the water, whose bell tower, the symbol of the town, is built on the base of a lighthouse.
Notice to mountain lovers who want to get some height. Why not take on the ascent of the Pic du Canigou? From the top of its 2,784 m, the sacred mountain of the Catalans will offer you a breathtaking view of a beautiful and proud land. If this view is deserved, it does not require a very experienced walker. For a memorable souvenir, take advantage of the Midsummer's Day celebrations to walk the slopes of the mountain at night by torchlight. Also worth seeing at the foot of Canigou are two of the most beautiful abbeys in the south of France: Saint-Martin-du-Canigou and Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa.
