Perched on a hilltop, the Palace of the Kings of Majorca is one of the oldest royal residences in France a powerful symbol of Perpignan’s golden age during the short-lived Kingdom of Majorca (1276–1344). Created by James I the Conqueror for his younger son, this kingdom included the Balearic Islands, Montpellier, and part of Roussillon. While the interior of this Gothic-style palace-fortress is relatively austere, its magnificent chapels reflect the refinement of the era and Perpignan’s importance at the time.

A true symbol of the city, the Castillet was built in the 14th century. Made of brick and marble, it once served as the main gateway into Perpignan’s fortified walls and now marks the entrance to the old town. Over the centuries, it has been used as a prison and a military post. Today, it houses the prestigious Catalan Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions and even a cinema. For those feeling adventurous, 142 steps lead to the top of the tower, offering panoramic views of the city.

Built between the 14th and 17th centuries, this Southern Gothic cathedral stretches over 70 meters in length. Its nave is impressive, as are its pink marble floors, richly decorated altarpieces, stunning stained glass windows, and elegant wall decorations. Just behind the cathedral, don’t miss the Campo Santo, the oldest funerary cloister in France. This vast, minimalist courtyard, surrounded by white marble Gothic arcades, offers a peaceful retreat right in the heart of the city.
 

Named after the most famous local painter (1659–1743), renowned portraitist of Louis XIV and the royal family, this museum features a rich collection of Gothic, Baroque, and modern works. Among its masterpieces, the Retable de la Trinité stands out as a key example of Catalan Gothic painting, alongside sculptures by Aristide Maillol and paintings by Pablo Picasso and Raoul Dufy.

South of Perpignan, Collioure lies close to the Spanish border. This small town, with its charming village atmosphere, is a cultural gem and a showcase of Fauvism with an entire space dedicated to this artistic movement and also boasts a modern art museum. Beach lovers will find plenty to enjoy here, while wanderers can lose themselves in the steep, winding, colorful, and flower-filled streets of the Mouré district and Port d’Avall. At the water’s edge, the small church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges seems to float on the sea.
