It all begins at Place Sainte-Anne. All around, colorful half-timbered houses seem almost on the verge of leaning over. The city boasts around 300 beautifully preserved examples, some of them listed. A powerful symbol of Breton history, the Parliament was designed by the architect of the Luxembourg Palace in Paris. Construction took nearly 40 years, with another 50 years needed to complete its decoration! While it survived the great fire that devastated Rennes in the 18th century, the Palace could not withstand the fire of 1994. Restored since, it still houses the Court of Appeal and opens its doors to visitors to admire its woodwork and gilding. Don’t miss the incredible coffered ceiling of the Grand’Chambre.

One of the most beautiful gardens in France, Thabor Park spans 10 hectares. Under the Second Empire, the city transformed the former orchard of the monks of Saint-Melaine into a space open to everyone. Come here to shop at stalls overflowing with local products, or to savor regional specialties, including the famous galette-saucisse. You might even discover the origins of the Breton crêpe here: legend has it that it was born from a peasant woman’s mishap, spilling her buckwheat batter onto a hot stone.
