ORADOUR-SUR-GLANE

On 10 June 1944, four days after the arrival of Allied troops on the beaches of Normandy, an entire village—642 people—was destroyed by the elite "Das Reich" division. Sections of burnt-out walls, a memorial, and a cemetery where the victims were buried bear witness to the events. The Memorial Centre, which teaches future generations about the depths of human violence, symbolises both destruction and resistance.

ROCHECHOUART

Located 15 km from Saint-Junien, Rochechouart features a beautiful, 13th-century castle. It is home to the Departmental Museum of Modern Art. There you can admire work from Christian Boltanski, Annette Messager, Richard Long, and Raoul Hausmann. Rochechouart was also built atop a meteorite crater created 200 million years ago. Impact melt rock was formed when the meteor fused with the rock on earth. Their yellow, green, and red colouring gives a distinctive look to the local buildings.
