ORADOUR-SUR-GLANEOn 10 June 1944, four days after the arrival of Allied troops on the beaches of Normandy, an entire village—642 people—was destroyed by the elite "Das Reich" division. Sections of burnt-out walls, a memorial, and a cemetery where the victims were buried bear witness to the events. The Memorial Centre, which teaches future generations about the depths of human violence, symbolises both destruction and resistance.
LIMOGESLimoges, the capital of porcelain, is worth a trip for its episcopal city surrounding the cathedral and its lively, commercial Château district, which was built on the neighbouring slope around Saint Martial Abbey. Limoges is full of energy and attractive stores that unfurl along the streets and the built-up banks of the Vienne, making it a great place to wander. Don't miss out on the National Adrien-Dubouché—Ceramics City Museum if you want to find out everything there is to know about the topic.
ROCHECHOUARTLocated 15 km from Saint-Junien, Rochechouart features a beautiful, 13th-century castle. It is home to the Departmental Museum of Modern Art. Impact melt rock was formed when the meteor fused with the rock on earth. Their yellow, green, and red colouring gives a distinctive look to the local buildings.
