His two-star establishment in Sarlat-la-Canéda is the ideal stopover for those families with kids looking to visit the Périgord Noir and Dordogne. Especially as the hotel's 45 rooms are comfortable and practical, accessible whatever the time and perfect for rest and relaxation. "We're all about families and service," says Jean-Philippe who is "championing the region" with his hotel.

BREAKFAST

There's no restaurant at the hotel but the adjoining bowling alley – part of the same building – has one. "Next to the hotel is a pizzeria as well as a bowling alley, pub, snooker hall and games room," says Jean-Philippe. To get the day off to a good start, Jean-Philippe serves up a generous buffet breakfast. Enjoy in the dining room or on the terrace with garden views.

The Sarlat old town has wonderful architectural heritage with blonde limestone and beautiful inner courtyards. Wandering the lanes and discovering the old town's passageways is a real joy. You'll admire the medieval and Renaissance architectural wonders. Don't miss the cathedral or the 15th- and 16th-century private mansion houses (Maleville, Plamont, etc.). In Place de la Liberté rises Sainte-Marie church, revived by Jean Nouvel, where visitors can take in 360° views over Sarlat.

PÉRIGUEUX

In Périgueux, admire a Gallo-Roman villa in Vesunna, a Gallo-Roman museum site. Other options include the medieval and Renaissance town home to the Saint-Front cathedral with Byzantine influences by Paul Abadie. This is the liveliest part of the town. The pedestrian alleys are lined with shops and cafes and dotted with squares overlooking the incredible cathedral. Both bustling and calm, you're sure to love Périgueux.

ROCAMADOUR

Rocamadour is a miraculous rock, a place of history, belief and legend, the sanctuary of the Black Madonna and a pilgrimage site. Most importantly, it's one of France's most extraordinary sites. The old abodes, towers and oratories run along the steep cliff overlooking the Alzou canyon from 150 metres, under the watchful eye of the castle keep and its seven sanctuaries. Don't forget to admire it from the Hospitalet.
