THE BORROMEAN ISLANDS

The Borromean Islands are three pretty little islands off the coast of Stressa. They took their name from the Borromeo family which acquired Lake Maggiore as a fief in the 15th century. In the 17th century, Charles III occupied Isola Bella and built a palace in the Lombard baroque style comprising a host of ceremonial rooms, and surrounded by impressive gardens. Isola dei Pescatori has retained its original cachet while the whole of Isola Madre is covered with a fantastic exotic garden.

Want to admire Lake Maggiore, the region's seven lakes, the Alps and the Monte Rosa massif in one go? Then climb to the peak of Monte Mottarone. Overlooking Stressa from an altitude of 1,491 m, it can be reached by a panoramic toll road, the 'strada del Mottarone', or the cable car which departs from Stresa, Piazza Lido and reaches the summit in 20 minutes. In summer, visitors can roam the site on mountain bike and enjoy beautiful hikes. In winter, they can ski.
