A hotelier for 30 years, Emmanuel looks back on his journey with a smile. Is his work a passion? “More a series of life opportunities,” he says. “It’s the profession that chose me!”
A profession that took him around the world before he settled, in 2006, in Auvergne, in Mont-Dore, to take over the management of The Originals Boutique, Hôtel Le Panorama. Perched above the resort, the hotel opened its doors in 1968 and remains one of the standout addresses in a town renowned for its thermal heritage and unique architecture. There are no spa facilities in this 3-star hotel, but there is a pleasant heated indoor pool with a view of the Sancy range, a view also enjoyed from most of the 38 spacious, comfortable rooms. As for lovers of Auvergne gastronomy, they will delight in discovering the menu at Ô Yeti. For Emmanuel, two words are essential: hospitality and authenticity.

With its breathtaking view of the mountains on one side and the rooftops of the town on the other, the hotel’s pool is a perfect place to unwind. Covered and heated, it lets you enjoy the whiteness of the snowy slopes in winter and the lush greenery in summer. A true panorama.

The Puy de Sancy
Welcome to the rooftop of Auvergne! Rising to 1,885 meters, the Puy de Sancy towers over the region. A mountain? Not exactly, it’s a volcano! A stratovolcano, in fact (made up of multiple layers of hardened lava). To discover it, you have two options: lace up your hiking boots (about 3 hours round trip) or take the cable car. Faster, yes, but not effort-free, as you’ll still need to tackle a 20-minute uphill walk, including a staircase of 864 steps.

Lake Pavin
Impressive in more ways than one, Lake Pavin first strikes visitors with its almost perfectly round shape, measuring 800 meters in diameter. It is also the deepest lake in Auvergne (92 meters), giving its waters dark, mysterious reflections that have inspired many legends. Some even claim that on stormy days, the outline of a sunken city can be seen beneath the surface…

The Mont-Dore Thermal baths
The thermal baths are a must-see in this spa town, which ranked among the most popular, and most luxurious, resorts of the 19th century. Among its devoted visitors were famous figures such as George Sand, Balzac, Proust, and Clémenceau. Here, Belle Époque architecture reigns supreme, especially the neo-Byzantine style that surrounds the pools with its distinctive charm. Not to be missed either: the Funicular, built in 1898, the oldest electric funicular in France!

Besse-Saint-Anastaise
Step through the thick, towering walls of this medieval town and wander its narrow, cobbled streets lined with lava-stone houses accented by red shutters. Enjoy a break on one of its charming squares, each adorned with a flowered fountain. A historic town, Besse-Saint-Anastaise was long a stronghold of the powerful Medici family, and it is said that Queen Margot (the first wife of Henri IV) once stayed here. Today, this “character town” comes to life with traditional festivals, wine and cheese fairs, and numerous concerts and performances.
