BRESTBrest is a city that contains plenty of hidden treasures. Firstly, the majestic bay, with great views you can take in from the Dajot promenade. You’ll be able to admire the port, which has served as a French naval base for centuries. The harbour also sees regular visits from ferries and cruise ships. But Brest is also an important centre of oceanography research, and its Océanopolis complex is a brilliant place to learn about life deep in our oceans, with 10,000 sea creatures and 1,000 different species living in its giant aquariums.
POINTE SAINT-MATHIEUThis wave-beaten part of the French coast is truly a sight to behold. On this very beautiful site, you can explore a number of interesting attractions, including the old abbey, a lighthouse, a museum, a signal outpost occupied by the army, a monument to the men and women who have died at sea and, finally, a cenotaph in memory of all those who died at sea during wartime. You’ll be able to enjoy fantastic views over the whole area if you head to the top of the lighthouse.
POINTE DU RAZ AND OUESSANT ISLANDFound to the far western edge of Cornwall, this rocky outcrop sinks into the so-called “terrible Raz de Sein” stretch of water that “nobody has ever passed without fear or pain”. It’s an exceptional place, officially classified as a French heritage site. In this area, you’ll find the island of Ouessant, as well as the stunning Wild Coast. A savage landscape, beaten by the sea, where the rocks put on a truly spectacular show for every visitor. To find out more about the island, visit the eco-museum, the Créac'h lighthouse and the local visitor's centre.
CAMARET-SUR-MERPerfect for a quiet walk overlooking the Goulet de Brest strait, explore the charming seaside resort of Camaret-sur-Mer, which can be found close to some enormously steep cliffs, all covered with gorgeous heather and gorse. With its houses all painted in cheerful colours overlooking the port and natural sea wall, there’s also a ‘furrow’ at the end of the resort where you’ll be able to see the Vauban tower.
