The city actually has two historic centers. The first surrounds the cathedral, where remnants of the Gothic and Renaissance eras still stand — such as the Savaron and Fontfreyde mansions. The second is Montferrand, located to the northeast. One of the oldest protected heritage areas in France, Montferrand was largely untouched by the city’s expansions and transformations over the centuries. As a result, it has remained remarkably preserved since around 1630, with private residences, narrow lanes, sculptures, doors, balustrades, and cobbled streets all steeped in history.

This is where it all began — the birthplace of Bibendum, the iconic figure whose rubber has been eating up miles on roads around the world for nearly 130 years. No need to lace up your hiking boots to take in the stunning views of Auvergne from above. At the foot of the Puy de Dôme, hop aboard the Panoramique — an electric cogwheel train that gently climbs the 1,465 metres of this ancient volcano. During the 15-minute ascent, an audio guide brings the mountain’s rich history to life. Once at the summit, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views over the Chaîne des Puys, Clermont-Ferrand, and the Sancy Massif.
