A charming residence. A calm, peaceful experience. Welcome to Pascal, Nathalie and Audrey Mercier's hotel.
“Opening up a majestic haven of peace with plenty to offer to you. Drawing guests into the art of living, here in the garden of France.”
Le Haut des Lys, The Originals Relais opened its doors in 2014. The ancient outbuilding to Villandry castle dates back to 1849, and was transformed into a clinic and retirement home before falling into disuse. This accommodation in Villandry owes its resurrection to the Mercier family: Pascal, Nathalie and Audrey. They wanted a career change and so threw themselves into this wonderful project, for the purpose of “human interaction, and the pleasure of giving pleasure to people and providing the accommodation that the castle’s surroundings were missing”. The Renaissance residence and its famous gardens are actually only a 5-minute walk away! It was all a bit of a mad adventure for the Mercier family: it took them 4 years to transform the 1200 m2 building and its grounds into a beautiful 3-star hotel, with 19 welcoming and comfortable bedrooms, that now is one of the best in Loire Valley. “We wanted our guests to experience the spaciousness of a country hotel and 21st-century comfort, whilst also preserving the building’s authenticity”. Charm, calm and serenity. The gamble more than paid off.
Le Haut des Lys, The Originals Relais comprises 2 buildings, which are home to 19 bespoke, spacious, understated and modern rooms. Large beds (160 or 180 cm) are provided, with a room with a terrace and a private jacuzzi. An air-conditioned room is located on the ground floor with access to the garden and terrace. Families will be able to enjoy interconnecting rooms which can accommodate up to 4 people.

From breakfast to dinner, at the Le Haut des Lys, The Originals Relais it’s all about local produce. You'll find all sorts of regional jam, honey, fruit juice and meats on the morning buffet, as part of a wide choice of tasty meal options and drinks. Every evening, the Mercier family invites you to enjoy a meal at their partner restaurant, L’Etape Gourmande, a farmhouse inn which will treat you to wonderful food that is typical of Tours. If you’d like a set menu or snacks to share, head to the estate’s former chapel, which has been partly converted into a lounge bar. There - or out on the terrace - you will be able to enjoy the Ardoise Tourangelle, featuring the Loire Valley specialities of charcuterie meats and goat cheese.
Flanked by nature and castles, in the peace and quiet of the beautiful Loire Valley region, Le Haut des Lys, The Originals Relais offers guests an experience like no other, whether they're staying for an evening, a weekend, or even longer.
VILLANDRYVillandry takes its name from the magnificent French gardens that create an enchanted setting around the Loire Valley’s final castle to be built during the Renaissance period. The Carvallo family name is inseparable from the estate, who were responsible for returning it to its original beauty. The gardens will transport you to a joyful utopia, while the castle will inspire you with its elegance and charm (particularly the oriental room).
THE LOIRE VALLEY BY BIKEMake the most of your stay in Villandry by taking the opportunity to cycle part of the ‘Loire à Vélo’, a unique cycling route through France (800km of bike paths from Nevers to Saint-Brévin-les-Pins in Loire-Atlantique). The village is located in one of the most beautiful and flattest stretches of the route before Tours.
THINGS TO SEE NEARBY
With castles (Azay-le-Rideau, Chenonceau, Ussé, Clos-Lucé, Amboise, Chambord, Cheverny, Chaumont and so on), oenology and gastronomy (Caves, for the names Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil, Chinon, or Vouvray and Azay le Rideau and famous restaurants), the city of Tours (historic, cultural and shopping centre), but also an escape (mini-châteaux park, large Touraine aquarium) or unusual visits (troglodytic valley, petrifying caves), the Centre-Val-de-Loire will satisfy young and old, lovers of good wines, beautiful stones and history.
What our customers say
We experienced the hotel totally as a relais of silence.
"Peaceful and enlightening time"
A beautiful location which is walking distance to Château Villandry and yet very peacefully located beside rural fields.
"Lovely hotel at the top of the hill"
Close to the Château Villandry and on the bicycle path between Tours and Azay-le-Rideau! Garden and hot tub for relaxing.

"Mini brak in the Loire"
We stayed for three nights in the annexe with our dog.It was ideal. The room was clean, quiet and very comfortable. The small fridge was very useful.Lovely garden to walk in and open fields a short walk away.Breakfast was very good but expensive. The sister restaurant (Etape Gourmande) was a pleasant10 minute walk away and was excellent. The centre of Villandry was a 5 minute walk but we thought the hotel location was much better than being in the centre itself.
"Best place to stay in Villandry and surroundings"
Wonderful boutique hotel, perfect location to visit the castle and then relax in the quiet of the countryside. My room was cozy and elegant, with a stunning jacuzzi on the private terrace, High quality breakfast and nice staff.
"Excellent hotel with clean modern facilities and helpful staff."
Hotel has been opened 5 years and all the fittings and fixtures, bathrooms and so on are modern. Staff helpful and were interested in us as guests - we were most definitely treated very well. One minor point was the breakfast which for the money could have had more choice. Overall thoroughly enjoyed the stay.
"A very enjoyable stay!"
The hotel has been beautifully modernized. Our room was immaculate and we were very glad of the air-conditioning and refrigerator! The hotel is in a peaceful rural location but within easy walking distance of the village of Villandry, including the chateau. The Mercier family were very welcoming and happy to chat to us and offer information on the places to visit in the area.
"A superb hotel in a wonderful location"
Wow what a superb hotel. The location is excellent, the hotel itself and the grounds are beautiful and in a perfect setting. The owners - a husband, wife and daughter team, are first class and couldn't have been more helpful and friendly, which really made our stay feel special. They have restored the property to its former glory, but have added a modern feel which makes the rooms lovely to stay in. Sitting outside on the patio in the late afternoon sun with a glass of wine was just perfect.
It is a slightly unusual meeting room that awaits you at the Le Haut des Lys, The Originals Relais in Villandry. Located in the estate’s former chapel, all the original architecture has been preserved, with flamboyant stained-glass windows and an ambiance which inspires intimate confidence...“this is really more of a place to sit and talk than it is to work,” smiles owner Pascal. With a floorspace of 50 m2, it can accommodate up to 30 guests. Several different layouts can be arranged.
