This discreet museum in Poitiers is nevertheless worth a visit for its beautiful archaeological collections tracing the history of the region, from prehistory to the Middle Ages. Numerous works of art covering the periods from the 14th century to the present day complete the visit. Lovers of Camille Claudel can admire 7 of her sculptures here.
Welcome to the former palace of the Counts of Poitou and Dukes of Aquitaine, the seat of Poitou's justice system from the French Revolution until 2020, when the building was taken over by the city. This admirable building, a mixture of medieval and Angevin Gothic architecture, whose origins date back to the Merovingians, is impressive! To visit, the Maubergeon tower and the extraordinary Salle des Pas Perdus. Only two small parts of this 6,000 m2 palace with its 380 rooms are currently accessible.
This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful architectural jewels in Poitiers. The splendour and brilliance of its entirely restored 12th century façade is a formidable testimony to the Romanesque architecture of Poitiers. It reads like a picture book telling the story of the Bible, the apostles and many others. Not to be missed are the polychromies which, from the end of June to the end of September, give the facade its colours thanks to breathtaking light effects.
